History Book

It’s a social norm that history books are found in libraries and book stores. Contrary to popular belief, this African child was a walking history book. Every scar on her body is an event that changed the course of her hopes and dreams, every scar on her body is dated and is ready to be retrieved and read out to anyone willing to listen.

She knows the history book on her body from the front to the back cover, this is because she reads it every morning when she undresses to take a bath.

“Time heals all wounds” so she heard and has hoped so herself, but no one told her that the wounds will forever be burnt on her mind as long as there is breath in her body.

She has considered taking her own life countless times, but she is afraid of the one more scar that would be printed by the rope on her neck. “This history book is already too thick for one person to read” she would say to herself as she divorced all suicidal thoughts.

Occasionally she would read about the “Best Seller Book” in newspapers and she would think to herself:

“The best seller books have not yet been printed on paper, for they are on the skin of the African Child and they call them scars”
