Fathers: I Salute you…

How easy it is to be a father, you get your rod to stand in attention, you dip it in the secrete dungeon of life until you feel chills going down your spine, sleep like a baby and 9 months later, abracadabra, you’re a father. It’s that simple… But is it??? NO, no it’s not.

Let me start by thanking my own father, the legendary Bra Sapta!!! Sibamba ngazo zoz’bini Chunu, Madela, Shaka, Nokhepheyi, for everything…

Now to the rest of the world…

There is this line I hear a lot, it goes:
So and so is not a father, he is just a sperm donor
Basically this means that, just because you can create a child [sex], that doesn’t make you a father. Then the funny thing is that, the “sperm donor” that is being referred to in the statement would be walking around with pride, bragging and saying “I am a father, I have a son/daughter” the nigga will even have that child as a wallpaper/screensaver on his phone. So this got me thinking, what if all those “sperm donors”, as chicks put it, really want to be fathers but they just don’t know how. Same as sex, every man is looking for the mysterious G-Spot but a few have mastered its art. With that being said, allow me, if I may, educate the “sperm donors” out there on what it means to be a father.

The FamilyShare website has compiled a list of qualities that define a good father, from that list, here are my favourites:

1. Provider
This quality is self-explanatory and non-negotiable, as a man, a father, you should know the cost of Pampers, Nestle Nido, etc. and it’s a painful cost, all the father that check this box and carry the cross are unhappy where ever they are. They know…

2. Protector
As a kid, whenever someone mistreats you in the street, the first words that your mouth must utter are “I’ll tell my father”. That shit feels good, when your dad is your hero and protector. So fathers please let us be our children’s first hero before they idolise Batman and Superman. Protect your child from harm that comes in any form.

3. Teacher
Every man has his own principles and values in life, well, it is your duty to pass these on to the young ones, this helps your family develop and become stronger. Umntwana angafundi imikhuba es’thbeni ukhona, ujike uz’buze ukuba later “ifuze phi na le ntwana”.

4. Friend
I know this is a bit difficult for African men, as in most cultures “umntwana ngu mntwana” but with the new age and changing times, we have to catch up and acquire this skill. Your child must be able to comfortably seek advice from you, he shouldn’t tremble and shake when he hears the sound of your voice, awulo zimm. The problem is there is a downside to a child seeking advice elsewhere, the problem is that ‘the streets’ don’t care about your child’s wellbeing, you do. So when he is troubled, he must seek and find comfort in you. Trust me Braz, it doesn’t make you weak as a man to have a bong with your child…

5. Exemplar
As mentioned above that if you want your child to uphold your family principles and values, you have to teach them to him, that is just step 1 though. You also have to show them to him, because children are very impressionable, they want to be what they see, that’s why we spent most of our childhoods trying to be super saiyans and shooting Kamehameha waves, because we saw it on TV. So father, don’t be the “do as I say” kind(a) people…

6. The mother is a Queen
I don’t care what differences y’all might have, that woman is a Queen vha!!! That woman took your genes/DNA and multiplied it, she has allowed your family name to continue its legacy. She carried the burden of your seed for 9 long months, she still takes care of it 24/7 as it grows. That’s enough for her to be treated like the Queen she is, she does not need to cure cancer or some shit… Shout Out to all the Mothers out there, stay strong, good job, keep up the good work. In fact I am anointing myself with the authority and giving all mother a Nobel Prize.

In closing, big up to the father, and to the “sperm donor”, I never want to hear a woman utter those words together after today.
